A Guide to
Chicago's Best locations.
Picked by someone who's actually knelt down there with you.
Not a list pulled from someone else's blog. These are the spots I keep coming back to after countless Chicago proposals. In every season, at every hour, with every kind of couple.
Where?
After the ring. Before the alibi. But somehow one of the hardest decisions. You want it to feel like "you two", not a spot you saw once on someone else's Instagram. You want good light. You want enough privacy so she can enjoy the moment, and enough beauty that the photos still feel like you in twenty years.
Click through to see the actual moment. The light, the reaction, and the ring. Captured at each spot.
Skyline & Rooftop Views
For the big, unmistakably-Chicago moment. When the backdrop needs to feel as important as the words being said.
01
LondonHouse Cupola
The Cupola sits at the top of one of the most iconic buildings in Chicago, with 360-degree views of the river, the bridges, Marina Towers, and the Wrigley Building all at once. It's a backdrop that feels almost too cinematic to be real. And it photographs like a movie set. The Cupola itself is private, which means no tour groups walking through your moment, no crowds pretending not to watch. Just you two, the skyline, and the wind. A splurge, absolutely. But for couples who want a proposal that looks like it belongs in a magazine, this is that photo.
Kenny's Tip: Make sure you reach out to check their availability. They book up fast.
02
Ambassador Chicago
The Ambassador Hotel in the Gold Coast has a rooftop feel that's different from downtown's high-rise proposal spots. It's more intimate and more like being at a very stylish friend's apartment than a corporate observation deck. The Gold Coast neighborhood setting itself is part of the appeal: tree-lined streets, historic architecture, a slower pace than River North or the Loop. Good for couples who want the elevated view without the tourist energy of Willis Tower or 360 Chicago.
Kenny's Tip: A little floral decoration goes a long way in helping set the stage.
03
The Gwen Rooftop
The Gwen's rooftop terrace gives you an elevated view of the city without feeling too far above it. Just an intimate space with the cityscape all around you. The Gwen rooftop is covered which offers shelter from any rain and has built in heaters to keep you warm if it is chilly out. They include flower petals and lighted signs. After the proposal you can sip on champagne and nibble on the sweets tower while lounging on their outdoor sofa set. Their staff makes sure your needs are taken care of.
Kenny's Tip: When you want a team to help take care of your whole experience.
Lakefront & Sunsets
For golden hour, wide open sky, and the kind of light that makes any moment cinematic.
04
North Avenue Beach
The classic Chicago proposal location, and for a reason. Locals have jogged along the path, played volleyball in the sand and taken an evening stroll on the pier. It's easy to fold into a casual alibi — "let's just grab a walk before dinner" — and by the time you're standing there with your feet in the sand and the John Hancock rising behind you, no one questions the setup. It looks good at sunrise and at sunset as the light hits the skyline differently throughout the day.
Kenny's Tip: This is a popular spot for locals. Take that into consideration when you pick your date.
05
Olive Park
Tucked between Navy Pier and Oak Street Beach, Olive Park is one of Chicago's best proposal locations if you want an incredible skyline without the larger crowds. The tree-lined paths open to sweeping views of Lake Michigan and the John Hancock Center, creating the most beautiful backdrop. For couples looking for a romantic Chicago proposal location that's a little quieter than North Avenue Beach and the Adler Planetarium, Olive Park is one of my first recommendations.
Kenny's Tip: The pier is a popular proposal spot, I have backup locations queued up so you are prepared.
06
Adler Planetarium
Chicago doesn't have mountains, but the view from Adler Planetarium is our version. Lake Michigan sweeps out endlessly on one side, and the entire downtown skyline sits perfectly framed on the other. The Willis Tower, the Aon Center, and everything in between visible in a single wide shot. It's one of the best skyline views in the entire city, full stop. Golden hour here is unbeatable, especially in fall when the light turns the buildings amber. Also excellent for a nighttime skyline proposal, when every building lights up individually and Chicago looks like a jewelry box.
Kenny's Tip: This area is full of tourists, definitely need to have a plan B and C. I'm here to help.
Gardens & Green Space
For quiet, lush, and full of private corners. When you want the moment to feel wrapped in something living.
07
Chicago Botanic Garden
There is no shortage of amazing proposal locations in the Chicago Botanic Garden. There is the Japanese Garden, Rose Garden, and The English Walled Garden. All of their spaces feel so serene. A wooden arched bridge over calm water, carefully manicured trees that turn different colors at different times of the year, and flowers in every season. The Garden covers so much ground that it's easy to stage a surprise family reveal in a nearby garden after the proposal itself. Away from the city noise, no rush. Just the two of you.
Kenny's Tip: So many options, each section has its own nuances and beauty. Inquire about photo permits.
08
People's Gas Pavilion (Honeycomb)
The People's Gas Pavilion, most people call it the Honeycomb, sits on the edge of Lincoln Park's South Pond with the downtown skyline rising behind it. The structure itself is one of the most photographable pieces of contemporary architecture in the city: a curved wooden lattice canopy that creates dappled light and beautiful geometric shadows across whatever's underneath it. It works two ways as a proposal spot: as a foreground frame for the skyline behind, or as a full setting on its own if the light hits the wood just right. Great for couples who want something visually distinctive without going far from the standard skyline locations.
Kenny's Tip: The Honeycomb can be extremely busy hosting weddings and yoga. Plan accordingly.
09
Garden of the Phoenix
Tucked away in Jackson Park, the Garden of the Phoenix is one of Chicago's hidden gems and unique proposal location. Inspired by traditional Japanese gardens, it features winding stone paths, wooden bridges, koi ponds, and beautifully landscaped gardens that create an intimate setting for a surprise proposal. Spring brings spectacular cherry blossoms, while fall transforms the garden with rich autumn color, making it a beautiful location in more than one season. If you're looking for a Chicago proposal location that feels quiet, romantic, and a little removed from the city's fast pace, this is one of lesser known places to recommend.
Kenny's Tip: It's literally off a beaten path. Make sure you know how to get there after you park.
The Riverwalk
Bridges, boats, and that unmistakable Chicago architecture. Two completely different feelings depending on the hour — plus a hidden third option.
10
Riverwalk by Day
The Chicago Riverwalk is a unique feature of our city. You're standing at water level with some of the city's most famous architectural buildings rising directly above you. The Wrigley Building, the Marina Towers, the Merchandise Mart, and the iconic bridges. During the day it has an energy that feels like Chicago: people walking to work, boats going by, people biking through, the city moving around you. The trickiest part is finding a semi-private stretch, which changes by hour and by season. I know the specific corners that work.
Kenny's Tip: It's a long riverwalk with so many possible spots to propose. Each have their own pros and cons.
11
Riverwalk by Night
The Riverwalk at night is one of my personal favorites. Everything changes and the city comes alive. The architectural lighting comes on, the buildings reflect off the water, and the whole area feels romantic in a way daylight can't touch. It feels cinematic, like you are walking through a movie scene. Easy to work into a natural alibi: grabbing a drink at one of the restaurants, walking off dinner, or meeting a friend downtown. It's great for couples who want the proposal to feel intimate and private rather than energetic.
Kenny's Tip: It's 'easier' to get all dressed up for a romantic stroll on the Riverwalk before/after dinner.
12
River Point Park
River Point Park is one of Chicago's more recent proposal secrets. Tucked at the confluence of the Chicago River's north and south branches, it offers a specific view of the city you can't get anywhere else. A view down the river from the west. The buildings open up in front of you, the water bends around the park itself, and there's a real sense of standing at the geographic heart of the city. Because it's tucked away in the West Loop and not on any tourist itinerary, it's a little more private on most days. The elevated riverfront design creates natural levels for beautiful compositional shots. A strong pick for couples who want somewhere meaningful but off the beaten path.
Kenny's Tip: Make a reservation at Gibson's Italia that overlooks this park. A natural alibi.
Seasonal & Neighborhood
For couples with a story tied to a specific season or a specific corner of the city. The locations that mean something before the photograph is even taken.
13
University of Chicago (Hyde Park)
The University of Chicago in Hyde Park is one of the most beautiful campuses in the entire Chicago area for a proposal. It's especially meaningful for couples who met there, went to school there, or just genuinely love the old world architecture. The main quadrangle is stunning in every season: ivy-covered stone buildings, arched walkways, tree-lined paths that feel like they belong at Oxford. Rockefeller Chapel adds a dramatic vertical element if we want it. The lakefront just east of campus gives us access to Lake Michigan via Promontory Point and a completely different backdrop within a short drive. Because it's south of downtown and outside most tourists' itineraries, it's genuinely private and quiet on weekends.
Kenny's Tip: Love all the photographic corners on campus. Hire a photographer that knows where the best spots are.
14
Winter on Michigan Avenue
Michigan Avenue in winter is one of the most underrated proposal settings in the country. The holiday lights go up before Thanksgiving and stay through the New Year, transforming the entire Magnificent Mile into something that looks like a movie scene. The Wrigley Building glows white, the Christmas trees line the street, the historic architecture is dressed for the season, and light snow, if we get lucky, turns the whole thing magical. It's also easy to build into a natural alibi: dinner at one of the Michigan Avenue restaurants, a walk to see the lights, a stop for hot chocolate. Bundle up. Bring gloves you can slip off quickly. Or perhaps we can get lucky and it will be one of those 'warmer than usual' kind of days that seem to be more frequent each year.
Kenny's Tip: There are lots of options for holiday decor, take a look around to find the decor your partner would like the most.
Add a Styled Surprise
When a beautiful backdrop isn't quite enough. Small touches that transform the classic spots into something unforgettable.
15
A Flower Wall at North Ave Beach
Sometimes the location is the classic spot, just dressed up. A rose heart wreath, a sunset, and a beach everyone already loves becomes something nobody's seen before.
Kenny's Tip: You can reach out to them for exclusive access to private locations for your proposal.
Not Seeing It Here?
Have a location already in mind?
Sometimes the best spot isn't the most photogenic skyline — it's where you actually fell in love. Bring me your idea and I'll tell you honestly what will and won't work.
The most beautiful location in the city won't matter if it doesn't feel like you two. Every couple on this page had a dozen options. They picked the one that meant something. That's always my first question when we start planning. Not "where's prettiest," but "what do you think your partner would like."
