Hi, I'm Kenny Nakai.

As a Chicago wedding photographer, I’m lucky enough to document some of the city's most beautiful love stories.

Welcome to my Chicago wedding blog, where I share my latest work and the deeper stories behind the photos. I hope you find inspiration here and connect with the feelings I had when I created each one.

CHICAGO WEDDING BLOG

REAL STORIES.

REAL VENUES.

REAL MOMENTS.

chicago skyline engagement night

It's been quite the journey since I started this Chicago wedding blog in 2007. Photography is more than something to post on social media. It's a time capsule. Stopping. Freezing. Holding a moment forever.

There is no greater privilege than being trusted to preserve these moments for the people I love working with.

Wedding photography has brought me to the rooftop Cupola at The LondonHouse and on to the turf at Wrigley Field. Not just documenting people, but our ever-evolving city, one frame at a time. One love story at a time.

A Lovely Old Town Chicago Engagement Session | H&J

Old Town Chicago Engagement Photos

Hailey and Justin wanted something a little different for their engagement session. They were drawn to a casual Chicago neighborhood feel, and wanted to include a few of Chicago’s famous brownstone buildings. They whole thing to have more of a relaxed, lifestyle vibe than a traditional skyline-only shoot. We also knew we wanted to end up at the South Pond area of Lincoln Park, so I suggested we start out in Old Town, right next door.

That combo turned out to be perfect for an Old Town Chicago engagement session.

Brownstones, Cobblestones, and Dappled Light

Old Town has this quiet, lived-in character that you don’t really find in busier parts of the city. We wandered around and found a few beautiful historic brownstones to shoot in front of, plus some cobblestone alleys that gave the photos a real sense of place. It honestly just feels like a normal afternoon in Chicago, which is exactly the energy Hailey and Justin were going for.

The light cooperated too. We had a little dappled sunlight creeping through the trees as we worked our way through the neighborhood, which is one of my favorite kinds of light for an Old Town Chicago engagement. It’s soft, it moves, and it gives every frame a bit of texture without being harsh.

Hailey and Justin started in a casual street outfit.. jeans and gym shoes, the kind of thing they’d actually wear walking around their own neighborhood. That set the tone perfectly. It didn’t feel staged, it felt casual and relaxed.

A Relaxed, Fun Session

What really made this session work was how comfortable Hailey and Justin were with each other in front of the camera. They embraced it. They laughed, they leaned into each other, they didn’t overthink anything. I love all the expressions and smiles throughout these photos because none of it was forced… it’s just how they are together.

That ease is honestly the secret sauce of a good engagement session, whether you’re shooting in a neighborhood, on a rooftop, or anywhere else. When the couple is having fun, everything else falls into place.

A Quick Outfit Change and Off to South Pond

After we wrapped up their Old Town Chicago engagement, they changed into a second, slightly dressier outfit and we headed over to the South Pond area of Lincoln Park to finish things out.

On the bridge over the South Pond, we made sure to incorporate the John Hancock and the Chicago skyline into the background. Even though the whole point of starting in Old Town was to step away from the typical skyline shots, no Chicago engagement session feels complete without at least a few.

The boardwalk made for a timeless setting too — clean lines, soft greenery, all the focus on the two of them.

Sometimes we got a perfect gust of wind to blow Hailey’s hair at just the right moment, the kind of thing you can never plan for but always hope for. Those are the frames you look at later and think, yes, that one.

Why Old Town Works for a Chicago Engagement Session

If you’re planning an engagement session and you’re not sure you want a traditional skyline or lakefront shoot, an Old Town Chicago engagement is such a great option. You get historic brownstones, cobblestone alleys, tree-lined streets, and a neighborhood texture that feels distinctly Chicago without feeling touristy. And because Old Town sits right next to Lincoln Park, you can easily pair it with South Pond, North Avenue Beach, or the Lincoln Park Conservatory if you want a variety of looks in one session.

Hailey and Justin, can’t wait for your wedding next year! Thanks for trusting me with this one.

A Surprise Chicago Lakefront Proposal at Olive Park // Alex & Ij

Chicago Lakefront Proposal at Olive Park

We had such a great time planning Alex’s Chicago lakefront proposal! He and Ij have known each other for years and had recently moved to Chicago together from Utah, so this was the perfect way to mark the beginning of their next chapter, within walking distance of their home.

Alex knew exactly where he wanted to propose: Milton Lee Olive Park, overlooking Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. He had the game plan locked in, and he had reinforcements. Ij’s sister and her partner were flying in from out of town to spend the weekend, which gave Alex the perfect diversion and a built-in way to celebrate together right after the moment.

The Plan

If you’ve been to Olive Park on a Saturday, you know it’s one of the most popular spots in the city for wedding photography and for proposals. On a sunny weekend day, it can get crowded fast. So Alex and I worked out a plan in advance.

The first choice was to propose on the pier itself. From there, we’d let him lead and follow him to whichever spot felt right based on the crowd. He texted me throughout the morning, whenever he had a moment alone, and we adjusted in real time. Having Ij’s sister there was a huge help, she kept Ij occupied so Alex could check in without raising any suspicions.

A fun little detail: IJ’s sister also helped pick out her jacket for the morning, since it was a little cooler near the water. That’s actually a great tip for anyone planning a Chicago lakefront proposal: if you can get a friend or family member to weigh in on the outfit, it feels much more natural than your boyfriend suddenly having strong opinions about your sweater.

A Unique Chicago Day

The weather gave us something I rarely see in Chicago. It wasn’t cold, it wasn’t too windy, and it wasn’t hot. One of those rare in-between days. But because we were between seasons, the shift in temperature created a little cloud that settled right over the downtown skyline. Every other neighborhood in the city was sunny, but the tall buildings downtown were holding onto the cooler air. The result was a one-of-a-kind perspective: the Chicago skyline half-hidden behind its own little cloud, framed by sunshine everywhere else.

You can’t plan that kind of backdrop.

The Moment

Once we got to the right spot, the plan went into motion. Ij’s sister asked Ij to take a photo of her and her partner. Ij did her best: she spent a solid 20 seconds focused on getting the shot just right. All the while, Alex was already on one knee behind her, waiting for her to turn around.

When she finally did, she was completely surprised. She lit up, ready to embrace the moment, and they hugged and kissed and got to just be together for a beat before anything else. After a short pause, her sister discreetly took Ij’s jacket and purse so we could keep going with portraits around the park.

As a Chicago proposal photographer, these are the moments I live for: when months of quiet planning collapse into one real, unguarded reaction, and everyone around the couple gets to share in it.

Also worth mentioning: Alex somehow managed to keep the ring hidden all morning at Olive Park, which is no small feat. Well done, Alex. His secret is too good to be shared on a public blog. Ask me for details. =)

Why Olive Park Is Perfect for a Chicago Lakefront Proposal

If you’re considering a Chicago lakefront proposal, Milton Lee Olive Park is hard to beat. You get Lake Michigan on one side, the full Chicago skyline on the other, and a quiet, garden-like setting that doesn’t feel like the middle of a city…even though it absolutely is. With a little planning around crowds (and a helpful sibling or friend in on the secret), it’s one of the most scenic spots in Chicago to pop the question.

He followed her to Chicago from Utah, and now they get to begin this next chapter together. Congratulations, Alex and Ij!

Chicago Private Proposal at Ambassador Hotel

An Intimate Chicago Private Proposal at the Ambassador Hotel

It was a beautiful day for Yuheon and Mia’s Chicago private proposal! Yuheon chose the Ambassador Hotel, located in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood, and it ended up being the perfect spot. The rooftop offers an unobstructed view of the Chicago skyline from the north — it almost feels like you’re standing in a mountain range looking out at the landscape of buildings and sky.

The sun was shining, and the clouds gave the sky just the right texture overhead. You really couldn’t have asked for better conditions.

Setting the Scene

Yuheon arrived early to set everything up exactly the way he wanted it for Mia — white roses in vases, candles, the whole rooftop transformed into something intimate and romantic. There was a little sliver of sunlight cutting across the space where they would stand, and I knew that was the spot. The light would catch their faces perfectly the moment he asked her the question.

Once everything was ready, he went downstairs to bring her up. The moment Mia stepped onto the rooftop, she was completely surprised. As a proposal photographer Chicago couples trust to capture this exact kind of moment, witnessing that reaction never gets old. She went from stunned to shocked to pure jubilation in a matter of seconds — and of course, the second the ring was on her finger, she made sure to show it off!

A Relationship Full of Laughter

One of the defining things about Yuheon and Mia’s relationship is their humor. They genuinely make each other laugh, and it shines through in every single photo from the day. Even in the middle of this huge, life-changing moment, they were smiling, giggling, teasing each other. That kind of natural ease is something you can’t manufacture, and it’s exactly what makes proposal photos feel like them and not just a pretty scene.

For a little while, they had the entire Chicago skyline to themselves for their Chicago private proposal on The Ambassador rooftop. It was a quiet, special time — just the two of them, the city in the distance, and the beginning of everything that comes next.

Capturing the Moment

After the proposal itself, we slowed down and took our time with portraits. I love using the natural light at the Ambassador, especially in the late afternoon. We took some photos with the sun flare behind them, rim lighting them for a more dramatic, cinematic feel.

We made sure to grab a champagne toast too, and I positioned the glasses so the John Hancock shone through the champagne — a little Chicago detail you only notice when you look closely. Those are the kinds of frames I’m always hunting for.

I also had to get a dancing picture. A little twirl, a spin, a celebration in motion. You could feel the excitement coming off Mia from the moment she said yes — her heart was overflowing. We finished with a close-up of her ring and a beautiful, quiet portrait of just the two of them on the day they committed themselves to each other.

Why the Ambassador Hotel Is Perfect for a Chicago Private Proposal

If you’re planning a Chicago private proposal, the Ambassador Chicago should be at the very top of your list. The rooftop gives you the Chicago skyline as your backdrop with none of the usual headaches — no crowds, no strangers walking into your shot, no anxiety about someone standing in your spot. The hotel does a great job of offering this private, beautiful space, and that privacy makes a huge difference. The moment gets to feel like it’s truly just for the two of you.

That’s the thing about a great Chicago private proposal location: the venue should disappear into the background just enough for the couple to take center stage, while still giving you that unmistakable Chicago feel. The Ambassador hits that balance perfectly. Privacy, views, romantic lighting, and a skyline that does a lot of the heavy lifting for you.

Congratulations again, Yuheon and Mia! Thank you for letting me be a part of this day. I can’t wait to see what comes next for you two.
